GPT-4 is a deep learning model developed by OpenAI that combines image and text inputs to generate contextually appropriate text outputs. It has achieved impressive benchmarks in many professional and academic areas, though it still falls short of human performance in a lot of real-world scenarios. The model is large, multimodal, and trained on an expansive corpus of data to learn to write coherently in response to various inputs. GPT-4 was designed to be more reliable and creative than its predecessor, GPT-3.5, as well as better equipped for dealing with nuanced instructions.

To evaluate the performance of GPT-4 OpenAI has tested it on multiple benchmarks, including simulating exams that were originally created for humans. Additionally, the model has been tried against traditional machine learning benchmarks where it outperformed large language models and most state-of-the-art models alike. Currently GPT-4's text input capabilities are available through ChatGPT or the API while its image input feature is being prepared for wider availability through collaboration with a single partner. To keep track of model performance improvements OpenAI has open sourced OpenAI Evals -a framework for automated evaluation of AI model performance-. This allows anyone to report any shortcomings their models may have so further improvements can be made.
